He was born in Lusk, Wyo., in 1922. He lived near Harrisville and Pecular, Mo., in the 1920s and 1930s. He lived as a hobo for a while before working at a Civilian Conservation Corps camp, and would often reminisce about his experiences. He moved to Parkdale in the early 1950s, living with his Uncle Fred, then moved to family property in Grass Valley. He worked as a flagger and a hired hand for the Oscar Lemley family. He rode his bike around Grass Valley, visiting Carol’s Kitchen for lunch and collecting pop cans for spare change. Later, as his balance declined, he switched to a three-wheeled trike. He was devoted to the Conservative Baptist Church in Grass Valley, his home on three-acres, his cat “Boots,” and his many friends. A bout of pneumonia left him too weak to stay at home, and he entered Evergreen Care Center in The Dalles, where he made many friends, particularly Fred Frazier. He is survived by cousins Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sappington and Kathryn Nofziger, all of California, and others in Idaho, Washington and Missouri. A memorial is planned for 2 p.m. on Dec. 12 at the Grass Valley Cemetery.
