He was born at Huron, South Dakota on March 24, 1924 to William and Violet (Hindman) Zastrow. He moved to Rock Creek (Oregon) in 1940 and attended school at Rock Creek and Arlington High School. He married Ruby Olive Wetherell in Goldendale (Washington) on May 27, 1947. He worked at the family farm for a short time and later for the Union Pacific Railroad. He was a World War II veteran. He entered the Army in 1944, serving in the Pacific Theater and Battle of Okinawa. He was employed by the Arlington Schools as custodian for many years and then by Cargill Inc. until his retirement. Until he entered the Veterans Home in July of 2001 he flew his American flag every morning. He enjoyed hunting, bingo, yard work and all school events and loved his family and his country. He was a Master Mason, a Scottish Rite and an Al Kadar Shriner and was a long time attendee of the Arlington Church of the Nazarene. He was an active volunteer for the fire department and ambulance in Arlington. Survivors include his daughter, Nancy Davidson; a son, Kenneth (Zeke) Zastrow and his wife, Anda Kay, all of Arlington; brothers, Stanley, Brookings (Oregon); Billy, Bakersfield, Missouri; sisters, Audrey Sabin, Pioneer, California; Maxine Linnell, Hermiston (Oregon), and Joyce Palm, Wenatchee (Washington); five grandchildren, Michael Davidson and his wife, Tiena, Everett, Washington; Rhonda Davidson, Jodi Grady and husband, Jonathan, Arlington; Tony Zastrow and his wife, Paula, and Kacie Nelson and husband, Craig, Farmington, New Mexico; and nine great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 11, at 10 a.m. at Arlington Church of the Nazarene in Arlington. Burial of cremains will follow in the Arlington Cemetery.
