He was born Oct. 27, 1915, in St. Joseph County, Mich., the second of four children to Zach Levi and Nellie Beulah (Hartzell) Worth. He was raised in Howe, Ind., and graduated from Howe High School in the Class of 1935. After high school, he lived in Florida, the Seattle, Wash., area and Kellogg, Idaho, where he worked at the Sunshine Silver and Lead Mines. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 and was deployed with the 46th Engineering Construction Battalion and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater for 33 months. He also served as an honor guard at President Roosevelt’s funeral service. On Feb. 28, 1945, he married Lois Maxine Shaffer in Sturgis, Mich., They moved to Kalispell, Mont., in 1947. He had joined the Carpenter’s Union in 1945 and started work with the dam construction at Hungry Horse, Chief Joseph, The Dalles, Wanapum, John Day and the second phases of The Dalles and Bonneville Dams. He retired at the age of 65 from Bonneville Dam. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, having received his 50 year pin, NRA, Rod and Gun Club, Rifle and Pistol Clubs. He was involved with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Program and had been an active volunteer with the Department of Fish and Wildlife, having built over 1000 bird houses and planted many trees. His lifelong passions were hunting, especially elk, fishing and anything to do with the outdoors. He is survived by his wife Lois M. Worth, The Dalles; three sons, Duane Worth, Hillsboro; Zach Worth, The Dalles; and Larry and his wife, Laura Worth, Lynnwood, Wash.; grandchildren, Zach L. and Kari D. Worth, both of The Dalles; Douglas A. Worth and Christa L. Weltz, both of Everett, Wash.; Laurie A. and Bradley Harden, both of Lynnwood; Shawn E. and Jonathon Toevs, both of Bothell, Wash.; Cheryl A. and Christina Leid, both of Monroe, WA; his sister, Kathryn Miller, Jackson, Mich. Memorial services will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Saturday, June 26, at 10 a.m. with Masonic Rites and Asa Jenson officiating. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
