Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 21, 2006, 2:33 pm The Dalles Chronicle, March 29, 2006 Roy Alvin Workinger, 80, a resident of The Dalles, died at a Portland hospital on Sunday, March 26, 2006. He was born May 28, 1925, in The Dalles, the oldest of four children to Roy and Esther (Griffith) Workinger and also had four older half brothers. He attended school in The Dalles through eighth grade, and then his family moved to Sandy. He began work in logging, carpentry, ranching, farming, hunting and fishing; any job he could find to help his family. During World War II, he served in the US Navy from August 1943 to January 1945. He returned to Oregon and logged along the Oregon Coast in the Coos Bay area. In 1955, he attended Barber College and began barbering in 1956. He returned to The Dalles in 1958 and worked at the Bon Ton and Kelly Ave. Barber Shops before starting his own shop. He operated a shop at Westgate and later he moved to 12th & Dry Hollow Road, where he retired in 1994. He married Genevieve “Genny” Gill in 1949 and they later divorced. He was a member of the VFW, Eagles Lodge and former member of the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gold mining, storytelling, remodeling his home, tinkering on cars, woodworking, carving and playing the harmonic, learning Oregon history and loved all things antique. He is survived by his wife, Ida May (Nielsen) Workinger, whom he married July 30, 1979, in Stevenson, Wash.; his children, Dwight Workinger, Milwaukee, Wis.; Tillie and Allison Workinger, The Dalles; step daughter, Marsha Aldinger, Seattle; step grandchildren, Erick and Scott Aldinger; his sisters, Patricia Kincaid, La Grande, and Eunice, Boise, Idaho; his brother, Lester Workinger, Simpson, Kan., and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and half brothers. Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 31, at The Dalles 18th Street IOOF Cemetery with Asa Jenson officiating.
