Wakley iwakley@msn.com May 18, 2006, 4:30 pm The Dalles Daily Chronicle, November 26, 1995 Hazel Bertha Woods, a resident of The Dalles, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 1995 at the local hospital following a short illness. She was 87. Hazel was born April 8, 1908 in Fossil, the youngest of three children to Henry and Rose Ellen (Painter) Philbrick. She and her family moved to Idaho for a short time and then returned to Fossil until the early 1940's when they moved to The Dalles. She married Clyde David Woods on Nov. 13, 1947 in Goldendale and together they farmed in the Smock Prairie and Wamic areas. Clyde also worked as a mail carrier. Hazel worked as a volunteer Ground Corps Observer with the U.S. Air Force while living in the Smock Prairie and Wamic areas. The family returned to The Dalles in the mid-1970's. In March of 1981 Hazel started her "career" as a volunteer for the Mid-Columbia Senior and Disabled Services. She was the lead receptionist for the agency, and was responsible for greeting clients, as well as training and coordinating the work of volunteers at the agency. At age 87, Hazel mastered the new 12-line phone system installed at the agency, and she was responsible for directing all incoming calls, as well as handling the toll-free information and referral lines. She received several awards and nominations for her dedicated service to the agency, including the Governor's Volunteerism Award in March of 1990. She had also been nominated for the KGW-TV Citizenship Award in 1988. In 1991, Hazel received the Successful Aging Award for the Mid-Columbia Region, and she was featured in local newspapers and newsletters honoring her for her dedicated work on behalf of seniors and individuals with disabilities. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, and was an avid reader. She is survived by her four children: Scott Woods of Scapoose, June Trotter of Fossil, Boyd Owens of Portland and Faith Winslow of Salem; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Woods, on Nov. 19, 1994, as well as her parents and two siblings. Viewing and visitation will be today from 2-5 p.m. and Monday from 8-11 a.m. at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home. Graveside funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 27 at noon at Parklawn Cemetery with Walt Markham officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Hospice of the Gorge in care of Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home, 1100 Kelly Ave., The Dalles, OR. 97058.
