Surnames: Woodside, Driver, Woodcock, Schulenburg Lewis "Vern" Woodside, 83, a resident of The Dalles, died at his home on Monday, March 31, 2003. He was born January 23, 1920, on Juniper Flat (Oregon), near Maupin (Oregon), the oldest of two sons to Louis and Faye (Driver) Woodside. He was raised on Juniper Flat and graduated from Maupin High School in the class of 1938 and then served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He returned to Maupin and married Jean Woodcock. She died in 1976. He worked for the George Ward Ranch near Maupin for many years. In the early 1970s, he owned and operated a service station in Maupin. In 1974, he moved to The Dalles and worked for Mountain Fir as a chip truck driver for 10 years. He was very active with The Dalles Senior Center, having served on the board and as a bus driver. He was a member of the Elks, Moose, Eagles Lodges, V.F.W., Lions, the Maupin Gun Club and the Good Sam Club. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, golf, trap shooting in The Dalles and surrounding areas. He is survived by his wife, Gladus E. Woodside, whom he married on December 23, 1976 in The Dalles; three sons, Bob and his wife, Evadne Woodside, Portland; Mike Woodside, The Dalles; Tom Woodside, Boring (Oregon); six grandchildren, Diantha, Erika, Tiffany, Summer, Wendy and Jason; four great-grandchildren, Alan, McKenna, Hayden and Ashley; stepdaughter, Connie Schulenburg, The Dalles; stepson, Cris and his wife, Kim Schulenburg, and their children, Shannon, Casey and Sarah; one step-great-granddaughter, Jaden; his brother Van and his wife, Sandy Woodside, Maupin. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with burial of cremains at Parklawn Cemetery. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at The Dalles Senior Center on Sunday, April 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorials may be made to The Dalles Senior Center, 1112 W. 9th Street, The Dalles, Oregon 97058 or Hospice of the Gorge, 751 Myrtle Street, The Dalles, Oregon 97058.
