He was born Feb. 12, 1931 in Dallas, the oldest of three children to George Albert and May Bernice (Beardsley) Wood. He was raised in Salem, graduating from Salem High School in 1950. He then entered the U.S. Air Force in November 1950 and was discharged in November 1970. He returned to the Salem area and worked for Merritt Truax Petroleum Products as a dispatch supervisor, retiring in the early 1990’s. He was a member of the American Legion, Keizer Elks, having served as the chairman of the board, trustee and secretary, and was active with the Elk’s Follies. He was a volunteer Keizer fireman for many years, and enjoyed the outdoors and camping. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Celestia Harriet (Thayer) Wood, Keizer, whom he married on March 27, 1953 in Panama City, Fla.; two daughters, Catherine and her husband Phillip Judson and Melissa Wood; a son, Mark and his wife Doris Wood; three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Sarah and Megan, all of Salem; two sisters, Charolette Smith, Salem; and Helen Youngblood, Olympia, Wash. Memorial services with Elk’s rites will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Keizer Elk’s Lodge, 4250 Cherry Ave. NE, Keizer, OR 97303. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-Quatt Crematory with interment of cremains at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
