He was born to George Henry and Nora Johanna Wilhelmina (Dahnke) Winterfeld on July 28, 1930 in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan, Canada. He moved with his family to Glasgow, Mont. at age 4, and at 10 years old moved to Forest Grove, where he graduated from high school. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 and served as a Military Policeman in Germany until his honorable discharge in 1953. His experience in the Army as a Military Policeman launched him into a lifelong career in law enforcement, getting hired on with the Oregon State Police in The Dalles just a month after his discharge from the military. On April 16, 1955, he married Barbara Lee Elrod in The Dalles. He was then transferred to Roseburg to traffic patrol. It was there that all three children were born: Jennifer, Greg and Stefanie. Along the way he kept getting promoted, and in about 1976 was promoted to Lieutenant and transferred to Portland, where he was in charge of the Criminal Division of District I. Then on Dec. 31, 1982 he retired. Upon retirement he and his wife experienced a Lutheran Marriage Encounter weekend and found it so rewarding that they became presenters themselves, presenting over 34 weekends. Not one to retire to a rocking chair, he started his own Private Investigations business, and ran it part-time while enjoying his retirement. He also taught traffic safety school for Court Services, and along with his son, Greg, owned and operated Traffic Safety Services. He and his wife loved Square Dancing so much that they held many offices for the Oregon State Square Dancers and Round Dancers Council until he served as President from 1982 to 1983. He is also past commander of the Sisters American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, as well as past president of the Oregon State Investigators Association. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Barbara Lee, Bend; children Jennifer Jacoby, Silver Lake; Greg Winterfeld, Portland; Stefanie McEntee, Bend; brother Robert Winterfeld, Graham, Wash.; five grandchildren, Monica, Melissa and Andrew McEntee, Bend; and Jeffery and Timothy Winterfeld, Portland. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Viola Gurske. A home-going service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 5, at the new Trinity Lutheran Church, 2550 NE Butler Market Rd. in Bend. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Memorial contributions can be made to the National Foundation for Cancer Research, 4600 East West Highway, Suite 525, Bethesda, MD 20814. Baird Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
