Wilke, 80, a former resident of The Dalles and a resident of Sea- Tac, Wash., died May 16, 2005. He was born in Woodland, Wash., on Sept. 4, 1924. He graduated from high school in Maupin in 1942. He then worked for Inland Navigation on the Columbia River between Portland and The Dalles to Pasco, Wash., on the river tugs. He also loaded barges for Inland Navigation in Portland and pumped barges for them in Umatilla and Pasco. He also ran the ferry boat in The Dalles and ran the Maryhill car ferry some. He was on The Dalles ferry when it made its final trip the day the new bridge opened in The Dalles. He was a Washington ferry boat captain retiring in 1993. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater. Survivors include his wife, Sharon; daughters, Evelyn Thorsen and her husband Kevin; and Cheryl Ann Wyatt and her husband, John; niece Joyce Gilbert; grandchildren, April, Heather, Jenny, Jacob and Kelli, and great- grandchildren Kassidy, Evan, Logan and Mayzie. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday, May 22, with funeral services at 1 p.m. Monday, May 23, at Yahn & Sons Funeral Home, 55 West Valley Highway, in Auburn.
