He was born June 4, 1921, in Spokane, Washington, the fifth of six children to Irving Nathaniel and Marjory Agusta (Chalenor) Wiley. The family moved to The Dalles when Dick was two years old and he graduated from The Dalles High School in 1939. He attended Southern Oregon College prior to enlisting in the Navy during World War II. He received several military awards during his two years in the South Pacific. His last naval base was in Iowa, where he met and later married Dorothy Elizabeth Bane on December 31, 1944, in Sigourney, Iowa. They lived in Iowa for 23 years where Dick operated People's Food Store. In 1968, they moved back to The Dalles, where Dick worked for Halton Tractor prior to purchasing Columbia Travel, which he and Dorothy operated until 1987. During this time, he traveled through the United States, Mexico and South America, much of Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. After retiring, he worked part time for the Department of Agriculture, receiving many awards for exemplary performance as an enumerator. He was a member of United Church of Christ Congregational, the Elks Lodge and their couples' bridge club for 34 years. He was an avid fly fisherman and loved hunting and travel. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Wiley, The Dalles; his sons and their wives, Don and Lien Wiley, Simi Valley, California; and Randy and Connie Wiley, Carlsbad, California; and his daughter Carol Wiley, The Dalles; grandchildren, Angela, Sadie, Ryan, Amanda, Melanie, Nathan, T.C. and Kyle, three great- grandchildren, his brother, Gib Wiley, The Dalles; his sisters, Virginia Cramblett, Gresham (Oregon); Margaret Wheeler, The Dalles and Marilyn Todd, Salem (Oregon). Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 7, at the United Church of Christ Congregational. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
