Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 6, 2006, 6:44 pm The Dalles Weekly Reminder, August 9, 1984 John Lewis Whitmire, 69, died July 29. He resided in Lyle for the last 20 years. He was born Nov. 19, 1914 in Weiser, Idaho. Mr. Whitmire had been a barber in Lyle for 20 yers and before that was a barber in Bingen for 20 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the VFW. Survivors include his wife, Leila W. Whitmire, Lyle; two daughters, Mrs. Ira (Dorothy) Barlett, Seattle; and Mrs. Michael (Debra) Woodward, Glenwood, Wash.; two sons, John and Ronald, both of Glenwood; five grandchildren; one stepson, Jack Francis, Las Vegas, Nev.; two step-granddaughters; four step- great-grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters. Graveside funeral services were Thursday at 11 a.m. in the veteran's section of The Dalles IOOF Cemetery, with the Rev. William O. Waltz officiating. Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
