Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 16, 2006, 10:44 pm The Dalles Chronicle, November 17, 2005 Leo “Lee” Donald Whitman, 82, a resident of The Dalles, died at a local care facility on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2005. He was born in Cass Lake Village, Minn., on Oct. 30, 1923, the oldest of four children to Donald Ralph and Melia (Schelke) Whitman. He lived in a number of different places as a child, winding up in Pendleton. From Pendleton, he moved to the Washington coast, where he was living when Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941. He returned to Pendleton, where he joined the US Marines on Feb. 23, 1942. After eight weeks of boot camp in San Diego, Lee went overseas to American Samoa, where he spent six months in jungle training. He was sent to Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, and Tinian, before going to Pearl Harbor and on to the United States. He was stationed at the Bremerton Naval Depot and then Camp Pendleton, where he was discharged Feb. 26, 1946. He returned to Pendleton, where he served as a city policeman for more than four years. He then moved to Reno, Nev., where he worked as maintenance superintendent for the city of Reno. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a member of the Eagles Lodge for 45 years. He is survived by his son, Roger Whitman, Portland; sisters, Wilma Jean Kelley of Okeechobee, Fla., and Donna Micheals, Portland; his brother, William Whitman, Walla Walla, Wash.; special friends and caregivers, Bob, Patty, Stan and Jennie Pieckert. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-Quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
