The Dalles Chronicle, September 3, 2006
     Frances Hubertina “Tina” Whetsell, 90, a resident of The Dalles, died 
Thursday, July 27, 2006, at a care facility in The Dalles.

     She was born on Oct. 4, 1915, the third of three daughters to Charles H. 
and Alice (Uebelhor) Schepers. 

     She grew up in Huntingburg, Ind., and attended St. Mary’s School of 
Nursing in Evansville, Ind. She joined the US Army as a registered nurse in 
1939, and was stationed at the Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu when the 
attack on Pearl Harbor occurred. 

     She married Erle Lantz Whetsell on March 19, 1943, at Scholfield Barracks 
Honolulu. She lived in Charleston, W.V. from 1951-1980, San Bruno, Calif. from 
1980-1998, Bend from 1998-2003, and The Dalles from 2003-2006. She was a 
member of the Roman Catholic Church, and the Pearl Harbor Survivors 
Organization. She followed politics intensely, enjoyed oil painting, china 
painting, knitting, and handwork.

     She is survived by her son, Erle Lantz Whetsell II, Jeffersonville, Ind.; 
daughter, Barbara Scholz, Bend; four grandchildren, and two great-
grandchildren. 

     She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, a step 
brother, and a step sister.

     A graveside service will be held in October 2006, at the National 
Cemetery of The Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. Spencer, Libby, and Powell 
Funeral Home in The Dalles, is in care of arrangements.

     In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Oregon Veterans Home, 
Charlie Wing, The Dalles, OR 97058.
