Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 4, 2007, 12:20 am The Dalles Chronicle, May 17, 1988 Thomas Horton West, 48, died in Portland on May 10 after having a massive heart attack. He was born March 31, 1940 in Portland. He was a graduate of Sandy Union High School and North American School of Travel. Among survivors is a sister, Emilie Williamson, Wapinitia, and two brothers, John West, Gresham, and Bob West, Vail, Colo. He was a 10th generation descendant of Barnabas Horton, an early colonist, who founded Southhold, Long Island, New York in 1634. He was a retired disabled veteran of the United States Navy and served on six ships; the USS Halsey Powell, the USS Miller, the USS John King, the USS Dahlgren, the USS King and the USS Hewitt. His tour of duty carried him through 35 countries including several cruises to Vietnam, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, the Middle East and the Mediterranean. He attained the rank of Chief Operations Specialist and retired after 18-1/2 years of service with many distinguished service awards. He had been an avid Skier and was raised on Mt. Hood. After retiring from the Navy, he worked for Lockheed and Litton Industries in the Middle East. He worked for Floating Points Systems in Portland and subsequently entered into the travel business and at one time, he owned his own travel agency in Clackamas. Private family arrangements have been made. Memorials may be contributed to the Silcox Hut Restoration, c/o Timberline Lodge or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are through Gresham Little Chapel of The Chimes, Gresham.
