Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 4, 2007, 12:06 am The Dalles Chronicle, March 15, 1988 Isham (Ike) Horton West, 84, a resident of Maupin, died at a nursing home in Troutdale on March 9. He was born Aug. 3, 1903 in Wapinitia. He was the son of an early Oregon pioneer family and his birth was noted in an early Eastern Oregon history book. “West Park” located on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation and listed in the Oregon Geographical Names and Places, was named after his father, John Isham West, who came to the Juniper Flat area in 1879. Mr. West was an innovator in the early days of the Oregon ski industry. He had worked as a farmer and rancher. Prior to their retirement in 1976, he and his wife lived for 43 years in Government Camp where they owned and operated the Summit House and Red Devil Ski Area. He helped popularize Nordic skiing at Mt. Hood in the early 1960s and was the first ski area operator to hold night skiing back in the 1950s. His wife, Albertine, died last December. They had been married for 49 years. Private interment was held on March 12 at Portland Memorial Mausoleum following cremation. Funeral arrangements were under the care of Gresham Little Chapel of the Chimes.
