Prior to their retirement in 1976, the Wests resided for 43 years in Government Camp where they owned and operated the Summit House and Red Devil Ski Area. Son of an early Oregon pioneer family, his birth was noted in an early Eastern Oregon history book. Isham was a long time member of the Oregon Historical Society. Isham was an innovator in the early days of the Oregon ski industry. Having been a farmer and rancher, he was a ski area owner and operator and helped to popularize nordic skiing at Mount Hood in the early 1960s, and one of the first to hold night skiing back in the 1950s. Isham is survived by his sister, Anna Hundley, Pine Grove; sons, John Isham West of Gresham, Tom West of Portland, Bob West of Vail, Colo.; foster son Horton Hackler of Bremerton, Wash.; daughter Emilie Williamson; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Albertine. The Little Chapel of the Chimes in Gresham was in charge of arrangements. At the request of the family no services were held. The family requests that any remembrances be sent to the Maupin Library, the Oregon Historical Society or to the Silcox Hut Restoration Fund.
