She had been a victim of Alzheimer’s for the last 16 years. She was born Jan. 13, 1912, in Mitchell to John and Gladys Traver- Vaughan. She was the oldest of 12 children and grew up in Mitchell, attending school there in a one room schoolhouse. She married Albert S. Rue on April 10, 1930. He was one of the teachers in the Mitchell school and taught several of her siblings. The couple moved to The Dalles in December 1945. While here he worked at the TB hospital and later Webber’s Cleaners. They moved to Walla Walla in 1971 and after completing her GED she went on to complete an Associate of Art degree in Nursing in her 60s from Walla Walla Community College. That led to a career as an LPN at various nursing homes in the area. Her first husband died on July 10, 1975. She married Xena H. Weatherby on July 21, 1979, and settled in Fresno, Calif. With his health failing, they moved back to Walla Walla in 1986. He died on July 28, 1988. She resumed her nursing career until Alzheimer’s claimed her as a patient. She spent four years in the care of her daughter, Joanne Roth, and the remaining years in convalescent homes. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church and enjoyed church, sewing, music, reading, crossword puzzles and camping. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Neil Roth, Newport; daughter and son-in-law, June and Richard Stanton, Milton-Freewater; four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, three brothers and three sisters. She was preceded in death by two husbands; a son, Leroy Rue, who died in 1942; three brothers and two sisters. A memorial graveside service will be held at the IOOF Cemetery in The Dalles on Friday, May 13 at 3 p.m. with Dr. Neil Roth officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the donors own church or to the Gideon’s International Ministries.
