The Dalles Weekly Reminder,  June 19, 1987
     Sammie Jean Watkins, 56, died in a Portland hospital June 10.  She was a 
lifelong resident of Kent, where she was born July 18, 1930.
     She was a member of Kent Baptist Church and had been postmistress at Kent 
since the early 1970s.
     She is survived by her husband, Carl Watkins, of Kent, who she married in 
Stevenson in 1952; a son, Joseph of Pendleton; a daughter, Danita Farris, of 
Elgin; a granddaughter, Jolene Farris; three sisters, Edna Fraley of The 
Dalles, Phoebe McKay of Kent, and Mary Lou Earl of Eugene.
     Funeral services were held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home 
followed by burial at Kent Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the American 
Cancer Society.
