Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 17, 2006, 11:23 pm The Dalles Chronicle, January 31, 2006 Helen Lucille Watkins, 86, a resident of The Dalles, formerly lifelong resident of Sherman County, died at a local hospital Friday, Jan. 27, 2006. She was born April 6, 1919, in Moro, the only child to Elmer Truman and Ethel Andrea (Rasch) Strong. She grew up in Moro, graduated from Moro High School in 1937, and then attended the University of Oregon. She married Francis “Fritz” Leroy Watkins on Sept. 4, 1938, at her parents’ home outside Moro. She was a homemaker, member of the Wasco Methodist Church, past matron and 50 year member of Eastern Star, Annie Fulton Chapter #124. She was a member of the ATA and PITA Trapshooting Association, Portland and Wasco Trap Clubs. In 1954, she won the National 16 yards clay championship in Vandalia, Ohio and then later was inducted into the ATA Oregon Trapshooting Hall of Fame. She also was captain of PITA and ATA Trapshooting teams many times and winner of numerous trophies. She and her husband raised registered quarter horses including, King Fritz, an AQHA champion in the Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and written up in the book: Western Horse Legends, Vol. II, Outstanding Quarter Horse Stallions and Mares, 2004. She was a member of Women’s Bowling League and several bridge clubs. She enjoyed deer, elk and bird hunting, travel and was a sports fan of basketball, the Olympics, ice skating and tennis. She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Phyllis K. and William J. Ullman, Portland; and Shirley E. and Orville B. Blaylock, Moro; grandchildren, Deborah K. Calver, Grimsby, Ontario and her children, Allyson and Nicole; Scott A. Ullman, Colorado Springs, Colo., and his son, Daniel; Kenneth J. Harvey, Medford and his children, Travis, Kelly, Mickey and Cleo; Lori L. and Mark Roberts, Portland and their children, Audrey and Andre; Vickie E. Blaylock and children, Ashley and Alec; Keith O. and his wife Tiffini S. Blaylock, Wasco and their children, Zachary, Makenzie and Kallie. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Fritz. Upon her request, private family services will be held at Wasco Sunrise Cemetery with Pastor Robert Stone officiating.
