Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 4, 2007, 12:02 am The Dalles Chronicle, March 15, 1988 Reinheardt Wassenmiller, 91, a resident of The Dalles area since 1933 died at his home on Monday. He was born Jan. 21, 1897 in Russia to Jacob and Lydia Wassenmiller and moved to the United States when he was five. The family settled in Kansas for a while, then moved to the Kent area in Sherman County where they homesteaded. On Aug. 25, 1933, he married Grace Alice Dawson of Hood River and they moved to The Dalles. He went to work for Seufert’s in 1934 and for a few years worked in the mining department, and later worked for the company cannery until it closed in the mid-1950s. He then went to work for the Wasco County Road Department until 1962 and continued to work for the county as a caretaker at Seufert and Celilo parks until the Corps of Engineers took over those facilities in the early 1970s. For many years he and his wife lived in a house located next to the cannery building and lived there until the Corps took over the park and tore the buildings down. He was an Army veteran of World War I and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Alice, The Dalles; two sons, Fred Wassenmiller, The Dalles, and Reinheardt Wassenmiller Jr., Salem; three sisters, Mollie Hillman, Oakland, Calif.; Natalie Swanson, Portland; and Freda Loos, Seattle; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Another daughter, Virginia Moreno, died in February of 1986 and two sisters also died earlier. Funeral services will be at The Dalles IOOF Mausoleum Chapel at 2 p.m. on Friday with Rev. Tim Foster officiating. Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
