She was born Oct. 1, 1911 in Hillyard, Wash., now a suburb of Spokane, the third of seven children to Loren Aden and Ona (Hatfield) Gochenour. At the age of six weeks she moved with her family to homestead in Wheeler County, and she grew up attending school in Spray and graduated from Spray High School in 1930. Later that year she moved to The Dalles and attended The Dalles Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated with her R.N. credentials in 1933, and worked for several years at The Dalles General Hospital. On Aug. 3, 1936 she married Johnny Wantulok in Walla Walla and soon left her full-time nurse’s career to help him in the restaurant business, although she continued to accompany family and relatives through their hospital stays. In 1947 they bought Jeff’s Cafe which they soon named Johnny’s Cafe. They operated it as a 24-hour seven-day-a-week business, catering many local banquets, including one for over a thousand people during the dedication of The Dalles Dam. They retired on May 1, 1971 after selling the restaurant to Alvie and Norma Clark. Her husband preceded her in death in 1988. She was a member of The Dalles First Christian Church, The Dalles Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, and had been part of the local TOPS and Weight Watchers groups. She was very family-oriented and cared deeply for her family and friends. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Doug Tumilson, The Dalles, grandchildren Mark and his wife Jennifer Tumilson, Bend, and Julie Tumilson, Seattle; great-grandchildren Alexandra Tumilson and Quentin Douglas Tumilson, Bend.
