Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 19, 2006, 11:06 pm The Dalles Chronicle, February 1, 2006 Bill “Stubby” Walston, 85, died Feb. 27, 2006 at Providence Hood River Hospital. He was born to Edgar Walston and Martha (Straub) Walston on Feb. 12, 1920 in The Dalles, the second of eight children. The family moved many times settling in Dufur. Known to many as Stubby, he attended school in Dufur, graduating with the class of 1940. Upon graduation, he left for Weiser, Idaho to attend vocational school. When he returned to Dufur he began work with the Oregon maintenance highway crew repairing roads. He met and married Rita Brown in 1953. After transferring to The Dalles with the Oregon State Highway Department, another transfer took the family to Parkdale in 1965. Stubby continued to work out of the Parkdale shop even after moving to Hood River in 1970. He knew Highway 35 very well after many miles of snow plowing year after year. In 1982, after 40 years, Stubby retired from the Oregon State Highway Department. He could really pursue his passion now. Stubby enjoyed the outdoors. An avid fisherman, he spent many hours along the banks of the Hood River. He also loved hunting and camping, especially the hunting and camping trips he took with family and friends. Later in life, he enjoyed visits from his grandchildren and great-grand children, working on word puzzles, and watching sports. His family was everything to him. We will miss you dad, grandpa, papa Walston. Three brothers, Verne, Richard (Dick), and Fred, preceded him in death along with his mother and father. He is survived by his former wife Rita Stratton, The Dalles; four children, Ed Walston, Mosier; Mike Walston, Odell; Cindy Baker and her husband, Cliff, The Dalles; and Debbie Stratton and her husband Rob, Kent, Wash.; three grandchildren, Travis Stratton, Michelle (Baker) Burbank and her husband, Matt, and Erica (Baker) Parker and her husband, Clyde; two great- grandchildren, Cole Burbank and Cade Parker; his brothers Ernie, Madras; Robert (Bob), Goldendale; Jack Walston, John Day; and a sister Ellen Crump, Arcata, Calif; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Feb. 3, at Anderson’s Tribute Center at 1 p.m. with a reception following in The Dalles at United Pentecostal Church 2616 west 10th. Private interment will be at Odd Fellow Cemetery.
