Walls, age 65, a resident of The Dalles died near Bingen on Monday, Nov. 29, 2004. He was born on June 18, 1939, in Big Fork, Minn., the second of three children to Harold Eugene and Mary Edith Gertrude (Burrell) Walls. He was raised and graduated from High School in Lakeview, Oregon. Shortly after high school Walls moved to Alaska and worked in the construction industry. In 1985 he returned to Oregon and went to work for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. He worked at several different locations, retiring from The Dalles Dam in May 2002. Richard was a master gardener, enjoyed photography, international traveling, taking cruises, collecting artwork, specifically Alaskan artwork, fishing with his grandchildren and enjoyed attending Broadway Theater in Portland. He attended Gateway Presbyterian Church. He volunteered his time working Meals on Wheels and giving to St. Vincent de Paul kitchen. He is survived by his life partner Judith Smith who he met in 1992; four daughters, Kelly Walls of Wasilla, Alaska, Shannon Baily and her husband Drew of Ashland, Jana Hardies of Anchorage, and Hallie Swartzbacker of Anchorage; a step-daughter, Nanette Kroft and her husband Jeff of Newberg, eight grandchildren, Zoe, McKenzie, Billy, Mitchell, Lauryn, Morgan, Allen and Payton; a brother, James Walls of Rio Linda, Calif.; a sister, Phyllis Hollowell of Rio Linda; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles and two favorite aunts, Arletta Burrell and Gladys Smith. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home with Rev. James Hazlett officiating. Private cremation was at Win-Quatt crematory in The Dalles. Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, 1112 W. Ninth St., The Dalles, OR 97058 or St. Vincent de Paul, PO Box 553, The Dalles, OR 97058.
