He was born April 27, 1930, in Kent, the third of five children, to Amandus and Emily (Loeffel) von Borstel. He attended Kent Grade School; graduated from Moro High School, then attended University of Oregon. He served in the US Navy from 1955 to 1957, aboard the USS Ajax in the Pacific area. He was a farmer in the Kent area, member of The Dalles Elks Lodge, former member of The Dalles Country Club, an enthusiastic member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed sports and golf. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Ann (Stephens) von Borstel, whom he married in March 1976; his step children, Richard, Robin, David and Dawn; his brother, Fred von Borstel and his wife, Diane; sister, Mary Sayrs and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Sondenaa and his brother, Carsten, who was killed in Italy during World War II. At his request, no public funeral services will be held. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Remembrances may be made to the National Rifle Association Golden Eagles.
