He was born Jan. 17, 1938 in Wolf Point, Mont., to Walter Harold and Alveira Inez (Skjevland) Vial and grew up in the Mid-Columbia area. Following graduation from Benson Polytechnic in Portland he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and received additional training in electronics. After military service he attended Portland State University and Linfield College, working for the Linfield Research Institute. He worked for a time at Tektronix, then was employed as a mechanical engineer for Hewlett-Packard in Colorado, California, Corvallis and Spokane. While with H-P he developed several manufacturing innovations for which he was granted patents. He married Jean Luke in Spokane in November of 1983. Following his retirement as a mechanical engineering manager he lived in The Dalles from 1991-97 and served on the City of The Dalles Traffic Safety Commission and as vice-president of The Dalles Yacht Club. Fond of all motor racing sports, he enjoyed motorcycles, racing Corvettes, and belonged to several car clubs over the years. He was a boating enthusiast, particularly cabin cruising, and served on the board of directors of the Hayden Island Yacht Club in Portland in addition to his membership in The Dalles. He also enjoyed trap shooting and was a member of a competitive team in Multnomah County. Following his family’s Masonic traditions, he was a member of the Order of DeMolay as a young man. After moving to Florence, he served on the board of trustees at the Coast Village Property Owners Association. Survivors include his wife Jean, Florence; daughters and their husbands, Molly and Deric Luoto, Wilsonville, and Lori and Craig Treichel, The Dalles; stepchildren and their spouses, Troy and Cindy Luke, Spokane, and Kristie and Mike Conklin, Corvallis. Also surviving is one sister, Cheryl Vial, Portland, and 12 grandchildren. Private interment with military honors will take place at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, and a memorial service for the public will be held on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 11 a.m. at the Willamette Valley Wesleyan Church, 29775 SW Town Center Loop East in Wilsonville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Veterans Home or to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
