Varner, 66, a former resident of The Dalles, died in Portland on Dec. 17, 2004. He was born May 10, 1938 in Fullerton, Calif. He moved to The Dalles in 1951 and graduated from The Dalles High School in 1956. In The Dalles he worked at the J. H. Baxter Tie Plant and for Inland Navigation on a tugboat crew. He later moved to South Gate, Calif. and served in the Army and did offshore seismic exploration for Shell Oil Co. He moved to Portland in 1962 and worked in office products and the furniture industry until his retirement in 1998. He married Sandra Ulmen in 1963. Survivors include his wife, Sandra; his mother, Pegge Varner; two daughters, Laura Hewes and Kathy Brown; a son, Jeff Varner; four granddaughters and one great-grandsons. A memorial mass will be held Dec. 22 at 10:30 a.m. at S. Phillip Neri Catholic Church. Memorials may be made to St. Phillip Neri Holy Names Society.
