VanVactor, former district court judge in Wasco County, died Jan. 26 in The Dalles. He had lived in The Dalles most of his life. Mr. VanVactor was born in Heppner, Ore., on June 11, 1908, and later moved to The Dalles, graduating from The Dalles High in 1926. After graduating from law school at the University of Oregon in 1932, he started practice with T. Leland Brown and became deputy district attorney, holding that position for four years. He continued to practice law until World War II, when he served in the Army overseas for 3-1/2 years. He came back to The Dalles in 1945 and continued to practice law until he was appointed district judge in 1967. He retired in 1972. In 1941, he married Mina George from Portland. They had three sons. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1982. He is survived by his three sons, Samuel VanVactor of Portland, Daniel E. VanVactor of Bend and William A. VanVactor of Eugene; five grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Stevens of White Salmon.
