Surnames: Van Osdol, Rich, Mortenson, Cole, Proebstel, DeRocher, Griswold, Moore, Taylor, Parks, Wells, Turner, Brown, Sanchez, Herzog, Nelson. Vernon Dale Van Osdol, 94, a longtime Mosier (Oregon) resident, died March 10, 2003 at a local care facility. Van Osdol was born January 21, 1909 in Perrydale, Oregon, to Alexander Leroy and Mary Alice (Rich) Van Osdol and was raised and educated in Newberg (Oregon). He moved to Mosier in the early 1930s and resided there until moving to the Oregon Veterans Home in 2000. He had served in the U.S. Army during WW II. On January 8, 1948 he and Eulalia Mortenson were married. She died in 1977. He was married to Jacqueline Cole from 1979 to 1981 and then married Elizabeth Proebstel in 1983. She died in 1998. He worked as a heavy-duty mechanic and machinist with construction equipment and was a member of Operating Engineers Local 701. He enjoyed flying, hunting, fishing, dancing, gardening, cats and family. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the Grange. He was also a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Veterans of Foreign War, the Experimental Aircraft Association, Oregon State Sheriffs Association and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He is survived by his daughter, Ann Van Osdol of The Dalles; sons Jim Van Osdol and his wife Julie of Pocatello, Idaho; David Van Osdol of California; Michael Van Osdol of Coos Bay (Oregon) and Andrew Van Osdol and his wife Penny of Pocatello, Idaho; brother Melvin Van Osdol of Myrtle Creek (Oregon); sister-in-law Dolly Van Osdol of Hood River (Oregon); brothers-in-law Glen Mortenson and his wife Jewell of Home Valley, Washington and Jim Mortenson and his wife Agnes of The Dalles; and grandchildren Robert DeRocher of El Cajon, California; Mary Griswold of Poulsbo, Washington; Elizabeth Moore of The Dalles; Tom Van Osdol of Nampa, Idaho; Christine Taylor of Silverton (Oregon); Lisa Parks of Washington, DC; Teri Wells of California; Krista Turner of Pocatello, Idaho; Jessica Turner of The Dalles; Laura Brown of Seattle and Gwen Sanchez of Pocatello, Idaho. Several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and special friends and caregivers at the Oregon Veterans Home also survive. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Van Osdol and two sisters, Zella Herzog and Geraldine Nelson. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, March 14, 2003 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
