He was born Nov. 26, 1908, in Fossil, the oldest of three sons to Thurman Victor and Nina Bell (Hutchison) VanHorn. He was raised and graduated high school in Fossil, and attended the University of Oregon. He married Elizabeth Viola Keyes in September 1930, in The Dalles. After they were married, they lived in Fossil, then moved to Arlington in the mid- 1930’s and to Heppner in 1941. He was the owner and operator of a grocery store in Heppner until the mid-1950’s. They moved to Salem for several years, returned to Fossil in the late 50’s, and then settling in The Dalles in 1960. He was a member of the Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge and Shriners. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and watching sports. He is survived by his two daughters, Susane Moran, Salt Lake City, Utah; and Diane and her husband, Fred W. Hogg, Portland; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth, in 1996 and two brothers. At his request, there will be no public funeral services held. Private burial will be held in Fossil with Smith Callaway Chapel in care of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Friends of the Fossil Library, PO Box 505, Fossil, OR 97830.
