     Elizabeth (Alice) Frances van Griethuysen, 89, died in The Dalles on June 
22, 2006.

     She was born in Richardton, N.D. on April 6, 1917, to Louis and Elisabet 
(Martin) Schacherer, the seventh of 10 children. Her family moved to Mobridge, 
S.D., then during the early 1940’s gradually relocated to Longview, Wash., for 
better work opportunities. 

     She married Charles van Griethuysen on Sept. 17, 1945 in Vancouver. They 
worked together in the dry cleaning business in Longview and Klamath Falls and 
owned their own business in Merrill. After retirement, they spent 10 years as 
caretakers for the summer homeowners at Lake of the Woods in Oregon. In 1976 
they moved to The Dalles to be closer to their daughter and her family.

     She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and the Mid-Columbia 
Senior Center. She and her husband loved music and dancing together. She was 
an expert seamstress, and enjoyed stitchery, crossword puzzles, and spending 
time with her family.

     Survivors include one daughter, Karen Skiles, and her husband William, 
The Dalles; a granddaughter, Shelly Skiles, White Salmon; and two sisters, 
Joan Seffernick and Margaret Vale, Seattle.

     She was preceded in death by Charles, her husband of 45 years, who died 
in 1991, as well as three brothers: Eugene, Joseph and Robert; and four 
sisters: Mary, Louise, Helen and Philomene.

     Funeral services will take place on Monday, June 26, at St. Peter’s 
Catholic Church with Rev. Todd Unger officiating. Recitation of the rosary 
will begin 10 a.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11.

     Arrangements by Spencer, Libby, and Powell Funeral Home.
