Utley, 87, a former Hood River Valley resident, died in Port Arthur, Texas on Oct. 28, 2004, just seven days before his 88th birthday. He was born to Merrell and Ethel Utley on Nov. 6, 1916 in Bourbon County, Kan. His early years were spent going to school and helping his parents and grandparents on their homestead on the Kansas prairie. He married his first wife, Christine Kastl on May 26, 1936. He worked with his father-in-law drilling water wells for a couple of years. In 1938 he and his wife joined his parents and siblings, who had sold their farm in Kansas in the spring of 1937 and migrated to the Hood River Valley, where they pursued orchard-related work. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting. When World War II started in 1941, he moved to Portland and worked as a riveter building navy war vessels on Swan Island. He took a home correspondence course that got him involved in heavy construction with Morrison/Knudson Construction Co. in Boise, Idaho. after the war, his first assignment was on Guam Island, which began a lifelong career of heavy construction around the world. His work included building the Basra Highway in Iraq, the Kandahar Airport in Afghanistan and a complete city in the Arabian desert in Saudi Arabia as well as dams, highways, airports and other projects. Survivors include his second wife, Mihn Ly; daughter, Karen Do, Port Arthur, Texas; sons, Joseph, Gilbert, Ariz.; John, Fullerton, Calif.; Richard, Kennewick, Wash.; and Ronald, Payson, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren, nine great- grandchildren; sisters, Lyndall Loken, The Dalles; Doris Sharkey, Bend; and Lorraine Cooper, Portland, and brother, Harold Utley, The Dalles. Memorial services were held in Port Arthur before cremation. His family will hold a remembrance in conjunction with placement of ashes in an Oregon location next spring.
