He was born July 11, 1917, in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the fourth of five children to George and Anna (Nuss) Usinger. He grew up in Fort Morgan, Colorado and the greater Portland area. He married Irene Ruby Schlitt on February 14, 1942, in Portland. He worked and later became superintendent at the Oregon Steel Foundry Company. In 1950, the family moved to The Dalles and he purchased Mid-Columbia Sanitary Service. In 1977, he sold the business to Art Braun and continued as supervisor for two additional years. He was a charter member of Gateway Presbyterian Church and member of The Dalles Elks Lodge, serving for many years as treasurer and scholarship committeeman. He was also a member of The Dalles Yacht Club, Good Sam Club, Thousand Trails Club, Mid-Columbia Senior Center and Metallurgical Society. He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Irene, The Dalles; his children and their spouses, Nancy and Dr. Brian Kelly, Hillsboro (Oregon) and Scott and Chris Usinger, Vancouver, Washington; grandchildren, Erica, Rachel, Lindsay and Alex; his sister, Mollae Paola, La Canada, California and five half brothers and sisters including his half brother, Ted Usinger and his wife, Glenda, Portland. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home from 2 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 12 and 8 to 10 a.m. on Friday. Funeral services will be held at Gateway Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 13, with Dr. James Hazlett officiating. Committal services will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, at Rose City Cemetery in Portland. Remembrances may be made to the Mid-Columbia Senior Center, 1112 West 9th Street, The Dalles, Oregon 97058.
