     Chuck Urness, 78, a long-time resident of The Dalles, died Aug. 14, 2006. 

     He was born in Bellingham, Wash., on Dec. 11, 1927 to C.H. and Vivian 
Urness. He was the oldest of three sons, being later joined by brothers Ed and 
Jerry. The family moved to Portland when the boys were young. C.H. Urness 
pursued his interest in the car business. 

     He attended Jefferson High School, playing both basketball and baseball. 
He was honored for his ability in the sport when he was selected the State of 
Oregon’s Most Valuable American Junior Legion Baseball Player when he was 16 
years old. 

     After graduation, he attended Oregon State College, making life-long 
friends in the Phi Delta Theta house while obtaining a degree in business. 
Just prior to his final year at college, he married his high school 
sweetheart, Carolyn Ann Hobson, on Sept. 4, 1948 in her parents’ Portland 
home. After graduating from Oregon State, they moved to The Dalles where he 
began what would be his lifelong career at C.H. Urness Motors. The mutual 
commitment of C.H., Chuck, Ed and Jerry Urness resulted in a business that has 
employed four generations of Urnesses and which has served the community for 
more than a half century. 

     He loved golfing and fishing with friends and family, cruises with his 
wife, rooting for their children and grandchildren in their dance, sports and 
other activities and following the Beavers, the Mariners and the Blazers. He 
was a member of the Elks, Lions Club and The Dalles Country Club.

     His wife, died on March 12, 2002. He is survived by his four children and 
their spouses, Linda and Ron Stover, Tualatin; Molly Thomas, Sherwood; Jeff 
and Connie Urness, Kennewick, Wash.; and John and Linda Urness, Springfield; 
his 11 grandchildren, Jeff Stover, Angela Dimpflmaier, Christie Giboney, Shawn 
Thomas, Jordan Urness, Barrett Urness, Bailey Urness, Matt Urness, Emily 
Urness, Danny Urness and Joey Urness, and his brothers, Jerry and Ed Urness 
and his sister-in-law, Marilyn Urness. 

     He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Sarah Urness and his 
sister-in-law, Pam Urness.

     Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 20, at the 
St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 10th and Cherry Heights Streets, with the Rev. 
Karl Vercouteren officiating.
