The Dalles Chronicle, November 8, 2004
     David L. Ulrich, 68, a resident of The Dalles, died at a local hospital 
on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004.
     He had been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer the day before his death.
     He was born Nov. 27, 1935, in The Dalles, the oldest of three children to 
Lawrence and Madge (Shearer) Ulrich. He grew up in The Dalles and graduated 
from The Dalles High School in 1955.
     He was a Sea Scout in his youth and worked on the tug boats in the summer 
from his 16th year and thus eventually worked full time on tug boats for Tide 
Water Barge Line.
     He was a tug boat pilot for Tide Water at the time of his retirement in 
1990. He later worked for Crews Shuttle Service and a local taxi business 
until 1997.
     He and his family enjoyed the outdoors, camping and fishing all over 
Oregon.
     David is survived by his wife, Shirley (Baldwin) Ulrich, who he married 
Dec. 5, 1970; his children, Dwain Ulrich, Sand Point, Idaho, Larry Ulrich, 
Priest River, Idaho, Lynnette Shockley, The Dalles, Mary Madden, Pittsburgh, 
Penn., Mark Ulrich, The Dalles, and Jeanne Ulrich, Portland; eight 
grandchildren; his sisters, Judy Lacock, Springfield, and Evelyn Kellar, 
Rainer, Wash.; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
     A gathering in celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on 
Tuesday, Nov. 9, at the Solid Rock Community Church of God, 2308 E. 12th St., 
The Dalles, with Pastor Ken Post officiating.
     Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with private 
interment of David's ashes at the Three mile Road IOOF Cemetery. 
     Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
