Wakley iwakley@msn.com and July 10, 2006, 1:24 am The Dalles Weekly Reminder, May 12, 1983 Philip Ross Tyler, 69, a resident of Parkdale since 1948, and a nationally-known watercolor painter of Northwest scenes, died Monday following a sudden illness. He was born March 18, 1914 in Mobile, Ala. Mr. Tyler had his paintings shown all over the western United States and had also been exhibited in the eastern states, including New York City and Washington, D. C. He has been featured in American Artist Magazine and was a member of the National Watercolor Society and the Western Artists Association. He was past president of the Oregon Watercolor Society. He taught numerous classes at The Dalles Art Center and had a show there in 1981. He was scheduled for another one in the spring of 1984. Mr. Tyler was a longtime supporter of the local Art Center and had donated paintings for many years for the local art auction. He had been voted a lifetime honorary membership of the association. He worked mostly in watercolor but also did some work in other media. His paintings were of western landscapes and his specialities were horses and scenes of Mt. Hood. At one time he and the late Mel Olmstead and Wilma Roberts conducted annual art photography seminars in the Mid-Columbia area that drew students from all over the world. Mr. Tyler worked as a home builder-contractor in the Hood River Valley. Survivors include his wife, Marin, Parkdale; two sons, Ross and Randy, both in the Hood River Valley; and a daughter, Lindy Tanner, Boulder, Colo. Private services were at Idlewild Cemetery in Hood River. Spencer, Libby & Powell was in charge of arrangements.
