Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 20, 2006, 12:13 am The Dalles Chronicle, February 21, 2006 Charlotte Mae Turman, 81, a lifelong resident of The Dalles, died at her home on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006. She was the fifth of seven children born to Sidney and Bertie Dawson, May 30, 1924 in Rowena. In her fifteenth year, she married Charley ”Curley” Benjamin Turman. They had two children, Charlie Ben and Dennis Dean. Charlie Ben married Gloria Jean West and they have five children, Tamie, Chuck, Joe, Corey and Mindy, all who reside in Spokane. Dennis married Sandra Lee Huff and has three children, Dean, Portland, Tony, Seattle, and Danielle, The Dalles. She has twelve great-grandchildren. Her favorite hobby was poetry; her work was often printed in The Dalles Chronicle. She wrote a song titled, “I Don’t Want To Be Adored” that was published in 1947 and recorded by Margrette Whiting. She and “Curley” enjoyed many years of retirement. They loved to travel together, camping, and fishing, bow hunting, and visiting family and friends. She traveled with a faithful friend, Grace Hay after “Curley” passed away. She was one of the original members of The Dalles Jehovah Witnesses joining at early meetings in The Dalles Hotel in the 1940s. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Jack and Don, sisters, Effie, Dorothy and Bonnie. She is survived by her sister Marguerite Coleman. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home from 2 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23. Funeral services will be held at Smith Callaway Chapel at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, 2006. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home is in care of arrangements. The Jehovah’s Witnesses are having a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006 at The Kingdom Hall. The following poem, found by the family, was written by Charlotte: “I can’t be there in person/ to attend the gay affair,/ but I thought that you would like to know/ in spirit, I’ll be there.” Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Gorge, 751 Myrtle Street, The Dalles, OR 97058.
