He was born October 10, 1920, in Madras (Oregon) to Charles and Elsie Thornton. He attended school in both Ashwood and Madras. He married Daisy Wharton on June 25, 1944. He farmed and ranched in the Donnybrook and Pony Butte areas of Ashwood before retiring in 1983. He was an active member of the Baptist Church, the Farm Bureau, Oregon Wheat League, was an ASCS committee man, and was a member of the Trout Creek Soil & Water Council, Oregon Hunter's Association, National Rifleman Association, Ashwood and Donnybrook School Boards and the Ash Butte Grange. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed camping with friends and family. Survivors include his wife, Daisy, Ashwood; stepmother, Fern Thornton, Redmond (Oregon); son, Dale Thornton; daughters, Donna Darlington and her husband, Rocky, Terrebonne (Oregon); Annette and Jerry Bull, The Dalles; sisters, Jean Peden and her husband, Bob, Ontario (Oregon); Bernadine Perkins and her husband, Ham, Madra; Peggy Hershey and her husband, Bob, Redmond; half sister, Anna McGolrick, Milwaukie (Oregon); sister-in-law, Vivian Thornton, Madras; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Marvin. Memorial services will be on Saturday, January 25, at 3 p.m. at Bel Air Colonial Chapel in Madras.
