Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 28, 2006, 4:50 pm The Dalles Chronicle, June 13, 2006 Mae Lena Thomas, 101, former resident of Wasco, died Friday, June 9, 2006 at Boone, N.C. She was born Feb. 21, 1905 at Mabel, N.C., the daughter of Henley and Miney Greer. She married Charles Thomas on April 9, 1922, in Johnson County, Tenn., then moved to Glenwood, Wash., where her husband worked in the logging industry until his death Dec. 7, 1950. She worked in the cookhouse of logging camps in Washington, as a welder in the Portland Shipyard during World War II and as a waitress in local restaurants in Sherman County. She was known for her rose garden, her immaculate home, her tatting and embroidery, and her love of long car rides through the countryside. She is survived by her sister, Dare Isaacs, and her brother, Donald Greer, Zionville, N.C.; her grandson Tommy Thomas and family, Woodland, Wash.; nephews Lynn Isaacs, Zionville, and Dewey Thomas, Wasco. She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. She and her husband had one son, Ralph Thomas, who died in 1978. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Vaughn Greer, who died in 1983. A funeral service was held June 11 in Boone, N.C. A graveside service will be held at the Odd Fellows Cemetery on Wednesday, June 14, at 11 a.m., officiated by Reverend Bob Reasoner, Wasco United Methodist Church. Smith Callaway Chapel, The Dalles, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sherman County Museum or a charitable fund of your choice.
