Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 28, 2006, 9:57 am The Dalles Weekly Reminder, January 26, 1984 Clara Margaret Thomas, 86, a resident of The Dalles since 1906, died Jan. 18 at a local nursing home. She was born Jan. 20, 1897 in Fergus Falls, Minn. Mrs. Thomas moved to The Dalles with her parents, Bernhardt and Mary Spiekerman in 1906 and taught at schools in the Antelope and The Dalles until her marriage to Fred Thomas in 1918. He died in December of 1977. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and the Marian Circle, and was also active in the home extension service. She and her husband operated The Dalles Delivery Service in the 1920s and 1930s until they moved to the Fivemile area, where they operated a farm until his retirement. Survivors include a son, William (Bill) Thomas, Dufur; two daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Selma) Gray, The Dalles, and Mrs. Edwin (Maria) Hoggins, Hermiston; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Amelia Maxfield in California. Another son, Alvin Thomas, died in 1945. Funeral services were Friday at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home with the Rev. Delmer Anderson officiating. Burial was at The Dalles IOOF Cemetery. Casketbearers were Jerry, Ted and Don Carlson, Marvin and Leo Polehn and Wilbur Spickerman. Memorials may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
