The Dalles Chronicle, June 29, 2005
     Charles “Chuck” Alexander Tays, 84, a former resident of The Dalles, died 
in his home in Bartlesville, Okla., June 27, 2005. 
     He was born Sept. 24, 1920 in Forest Grove to Henry and Dorothy Tays. He 
grew up in Gales Creek, Vernonia and Forest Grove. He attended Forest Grove 
High School and became involved with various activities such as football and 
band. At home, he helped around the family farm, and raised pigeons.
     He joined the National Guard unit in Forest Grove (fibbing about his age) 
and made many friends with whom he served in the Sunset Division. 
     Before World War II interrupted his college career, he studied at what 
was then Oregon State College, hoping to become an agriculture teacher. 
     He also developed an interest in photography. 
     While serving in New Guinea, he accumulated and disseminated information 
about enemy troops, made and interpreted maps.
     After being wounded in combat and becoming ill with wife as his office 
manager/receptionist, he built upon the established clientele and became an 
award-winning portrait photographer.
     In 1964, the location of the studio moved to 310 Court Street, where he 
eventually installed a color lab to develop his own prints, affording him 
creative control and more convenience for his customers.
     He was active in various community organizations including the Lions 
Club, Wasco County Historical Society, PTA, Soroptimist Club. He and his wife 
were active members of the Oregon Professional Photographer’s Association.
