He was born Nov. 8, 1920 in Didsbury, Alberta, Canada, to Walter A. And Mary Louise (Meeker) Swingle. He was raised in Salem, where he graduated from Salem High School, in 1938. While in high school he was the state wrestling champion and a member of several organizations. He served in the Oregon National Guard Coast Artillery at Camp Rilea in Warrenton and at Fort Canby in Illwaco, Wash. He later joined the Army Air Corps and attended flight training school in Victorville, Calif., where he completed gunnery school. While based in India he flew a B-29 Hap Arnold Special, flying missions over the Burma Hump from India into China and then into Japan. While stationed at Camp Rilea he met Mary Schairer and they married in Victorville on Oct. 22, 1942. She preceded him in death in May of 2003. He was employed as a Caterpillar diesel mechanic and salesman for Interstate Tractor in Astoria and Empire Machinery in The Dalles. Later he started his own business, Swingle Machinery Sales, in The Dalles, retiring in 1982. While living in Ocean Park, he owned and operated Westgate Trailer & RV Park and Oceans of Art Supplies. He was an avid hunter and spent many enjoyable times at his cabin in Pilot Rock. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Rob & Mary Swingle, El Cajon, Calif.; a daughter and son-in-law Claudia and Jim Jeffers, Gresham; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Claire Swingle, Salem; a brother, Noel Swingle, Richardson, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his three sisters, Gay Lanham, Silverton; Evelyn Reed, Willamina; and Olive Reetz, Ritzville, Wash. and a brother Ken Swingle, Bremerton, Wash. A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 2 at 11:30 a.m. at Oceanview Cemetery in Warrenton, followed by a reception at the Holiday Inn Express in Astoria. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association sent in c/o Hughes-Ransom Cremation & Mortuaries, 576 12th, in Astoria, OR which was in care of arrangements.
