Swartz, 91, a resident of The Dalles since 1921, died Tuesday at the local hospital following a long illness. He was born March 23, 1891 in Wamego, Kan. to William A. and Lena Swartz. He began work for the Union Pacific Railroad in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1918, and moved to The Dalles in 1921. He worked for the railroad for 41 years. Mr. Swartz married Dessie Hartman Dec. 17, 1924. She died in May of 1970. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Order of Railway Conductors, the Union Pacific Old Timers Club and was a life member of BPOE No. 303. Survivors include a son, Lawrence D., North Tonawanda, N.Y.; five grandchildren, one great-grandson and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ralph LaMay, Hillsboro. Funeral services are today (Friday) at Smith Callaway Chapel with Rev. James L. Wilson officiating.
