The Dalles Chronicle, December 22, 2005
     Jane Sutherland, 86, died peacefully of age-related causes on Dec. 12, 
2005 in The Dalles.
     She was born Sept. 19, 1919, in Medford to George and Grace Stowell. 
     She attended school in Cottage Grove, where she was on the basketball and 
track teams. 
     She attended Oregon State College, where she met her future husband, Dick 
Sutherland. They were married in 1939 and lived in Burns, Baker, The Dalles, 
Yakima and Bandon, where her husband was a teacher and football coach whose 
teams won the 1947 4A football state championship in The Dalles and the 1968 
3A football title in Bandon. 
     She was a stay-at-home mother who supported her husband and children in 
their various endeavors. She enjoyed spending time with her family, sports, 
animals and the outdoors. She spent time golfing every day until she was no 
longer able.
     She is survived by five children, Linda Archibald and husband, Max, 
Corvallis; Ron Sutherland and wife, Carol, The Dalles; Bob Sutherland, 
Roseburg; Scott Sutherland, San Diego, Calif.; and Lisa Keener, Eugene; six 
grandchildren, Travis Neal, Portland; Erin Sutherland, Portland; Skye 
McAllister, Sunflower, Miss.; Rhianna Buchanan, Coos Bay; and McKinley and 
Cleo Keener, Eugene; and two great-grandchildren, Abbey and Eric McAllister, 
Sunflower, Miss.
     She is preceded in death by her father, George, in 1941; her mother, 
Grace, in 1970; her sister, Ruth, in 1982; and her husband, Dick, in 1996.
A celebration of life will be held in Bandon this summer.
