Sughrue died peacefully in her home on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005 of natural causes. She was born Jan. 11, 1918, to Irl and Mae (Bridgwater) Randall in Christian County, Illinois. After graduating from Blue Mound High School and Sparks Business College, she worked for a number of years at various secretarial positions in Chicago. She served in Italy with the American Red Cross from 1945 to 1947. Returning to the U.S., she made her home in Washington D.C. where she met and married Joseph Sughrue in 1948. Her husband’s career with the Air Force required the family to make many moves in the next 20 years. She continued to work as a secretary at many of theses locations, a highlight of which was her position with the Chief of Staff of the Pacific Fleet. They made their home in Omaha, Neb., for the next 24 years after moving there to care for her husband’s mother and other family members. She ended her secretarial career after working in various offices at Creighton University. A desire to be closer to their children brought about a move to the Pacific Northwest in 1998. Her life was characterized by faith, curiosity and a love of learning. She loved to cook, bake and care for her family. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Joe; her three children, Kathleen Ricards and her husband, John, The Dalles; Patrick Sughrue and his wife, Jill, Vancouver, Wash.; Janet Fitzpatrick and her husband, Mike, Deer Park, Wash.; her six grandchildren, Michael Sughrue, David Sughrue, Luke Ricards, Rebecca Ricards, Mark Ricards and Andrea Ricards Goss; and six great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Eileen Randall Wasson, Severna Park, Md. Viewing visitation will be Friday, Aug. 26, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Rev. Todd Unger officiating. Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.
