He was born April 6, 1918, in Graceville, Minn., the youngest of three children to Dr. William H. and Catherine (Hanratty) Strong. He grew up in Graceville and graduated from St. Mary’s High School there in 1936. He moved to The Dalles at age 19 and went to work for Walther-Williams and later worked with Union Pacific Railroad in 1939. He married Thelma Catherine Nelson on June 26, 1941, in Walla Walla, Wash., and they made their home in The Dalles. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps as a mechanic and after the war, returned to The Dalles and Union Pacific Railroad, retiring as an engineer in 1979. He was an active member of St. Peter Catholic Church and worked many hours on the building of the parish center. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and The Dalles BPOE #303. He was a board member for 25 years with the UP Employees Club, better known as the Old Timers Club, serving as historian. He enjoyed his family, friends, the outdoors, hunting and fishing and was a staunch Democrat. He was quick-witted, had a great sense of humor and was a gifted story teller. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Michael and Lida Strong, Santa Cruz, Calif.; Susan and Bill Fatland, Tigard and Kathy and Ricko Collins, San Clemente, Calif.; grandsons, Daniel, Joseph, Connor, Gordon and Harrison, granddaughter, Abby; brother-in-law, Ted Billings, Aurora, Colo.; sister-in-law, Lucile Nelson, Walla Walla; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. John was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma, in 1999, and sisters, Rosemary Wolfe and Alice Strong. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home on Thursday, November 6, from 2 p.m. through the Recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, with Rev. Todd Unger as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Peter Catholic Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to Meals on Wheels, 1112 West 9th Street, The Dalles, OR 97058.
