Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 31, 2006, 1:35 pm The Dalles Chronicle, September 17, 2006 Gerald “Jerry” Archie Stevens, 79, a resident of White Salmon, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, September 8, 2006, at a care facility in Hood River. He was born on February 24, 1927, the oldest of five children to Reginald C. and Opal (Wells) Stevens, in Caldwell Idaho. He went to school in Caldwell and Idaho Falls. Jerry was a great sprinter excelling in the 100 and 220 yd. dash during his school years. He married Hazel Compher on November 25, 1944 (who passed away on August 28, 1993), and joined the Navy in 1944. He resided in Caldwell for seven years, at which time he worked for Idaho Egg Producers. He and his family moved to Klickitat in 1951. Jerry worked at the mill in the planer department for J. Neils, St. Regis Paper Company and Champion International, where he retired with a total of 35 years of service. While working at the mill Jerry concurrently had a scrap metal business. He married Judy Cornelius on November 23, 1999, in White Salmon, WA. He lived in White Salmon from 2000 until his time of passing. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bingen, and the American Legion. He enjoyed square dancing, RV traveling, and playing board games and canasta with his friends and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Judy of White Salmon; step-mother Barbara Stevens; son Gene Stevens of Cottage Grove, OR; daughter Vickie Ladiges of Kirkland, WA; brothers Ron Stevens of Boise, ID, Roger Stevens of Spokane, WA; sister Jeannie Newland of Napa, ID; sixteen grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, four step children, five step grandchildren, and six step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Hazel; parents; and sister Regina, twin to Roger. A memorial service will be held at the First Christian Church, 909 Court Street, on Saturday, September 23, at 2 p.m., with Pastor Wes Koester officiating. Spencer, Libby, and Powell Funeral Home is in care of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Gideon International Society, and the American Cancer Society.
