He was born April 8, 1930, in Longmont, Colo., the eldest of three children to Ira Eleson and Bessie (Pence) Stephenson. He grew up in Ridgefield, Wash., and in his senior year he played on the Ridgefield High School football team that won the 1948 State Championship. Following his high school years he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950- 54, stationed for a time in Korea during the war. He married Edna Haney on May 4, 1952, in Sacramento. She preceded him in death in 1990. After his discharge he went to work in the grocery business, working his way up into management. He managed Sawyer’s Ninth Street Thriftway market as well as East Hill Sentry Market before retiring in 1981. Active in his community, he volunteered for many years running the Elks Christmas Basket program for Lodge #303. He was a Life member of The Dalles Elks, and also belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Loyal Order of Moose, and had been a member of The Dalles Country Club. He loved golf, hunting, and playing tournament poker and pool. Survivors include his children; son, George Stephenson, Jr. of Hillsboro; his daughters and their families, Carole and Allen Ingram of Hermiston, and Cary and Brian Dahlberg of Portland; sisters, Gayle Musgrove of LaGrande and Sheri Webb of The Dalles; grandchildren, Jon, Bethany, Chris, Dani, Jed, Nikkolas, Stephen, Lauren, Lisa and Loni; seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held on Friday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Moose Lodge in The Dalles, with his niece, Salvation Army Capt. Laura Sullivan, presiding. Memorial contributions may be made to the Elks Christmas Basket Program, c/o BPOE #303 in The Dalles. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
