     Velda Louise Steele, 69, a resident of Salem, died of complications of 
colon cancer Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004.
     She was born Jan. 2, 1935 in Jefferson.
     She married Arthur Steele Sept. 6, 1953 in Woodburn.
     The couple lived in Woodburn for a year, then moved to Riddle for three 
years, Salem for two years, The Dalles for 16 years, Bend for 16 years, and 
they retired to Salem in 1995.
     She attended Salem Christian Center. She enjoyed hunting and fishing 
trips, bowling, cooking, and embroidery, for which she won numerous ribbons at 
county fairs.
     She is survived by her husband and her mother Velma Hampton, both of 
Salem; son Alan Steele of Graham, Wash.; daughter Sharon Temby of Dufur; 
sisters Dorothy Cutsforth of Gervais and Juanita Stuart of Salem; two 
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
     A memorial service will be held at Salem Christian Center Tuesday, Feb. 
17 at 11 a.m., followed by private interment at Belle Passi Cemetery, Woodburn.
Simon-Woodburn Funeral Chapel is in care of the arrangements.
