Wakley iwakley@msn.com and July 10, 2006, 1:42 am The Dalles Weekly Reminder, May 12, 1983 John Matthew Stapleton, 88, a resident of Beaverton since December of 1981, and a former longtime resident of The Dalles, died May 7 at a Portland nursing home. He was born Jan. 16, 1895 in Goldendale. Mr. Stapleton played basketball at high school in Goldendale; attended pre-law at University of Washington, and then served in the U.S. Army in World War I. He married his wife, Jessie, in Goldendale Oct. 15, 1922, and they operated a wheat ranch in Goldendale before he attended and graduated from University of Oregon Law School in 1929. He came to The Dalles in July of that year to start his law practice which continued until retirement in 1973. Mr. Stapleton was a member of the Eagles Lodge, the Masonic and Eastern Star Lodges, the American Legion and the Oregon State Bar. Other than his wife, in Beaverton, survivors included, a son, Thomas, Beaverton; two daughters, Mary Durocher, Beaverton, and Martha Stadelman, Yakima, Wash., and six grandchildren. Graveside funeral services were Wednesday at The Dalles IOOF Cemetry with the Rev. Karl Vercouteren officiating. Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the Oregon Heart Fund.
