The Dalles Chronicle, April 5, 2005
     Steve Stancin, 91, of Hood River, died Saturday, April 2, 2005 at 
Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital.
     He was born April 19, 1913 in Yugoslavia to John and Dora Stancin and 
came with his family to the United States through Ellis Island in 1920. 
     The family settled in Aberdeen, Wash., where he grew up. He worked for 
the Sunnyside Irrigation District in central Washington on the ROSA pipeline 
project in the 1930’s. He married Clarice Wescott in Sunnyside in 1946; she 
preceded him in death in 1993. They came to Hood River in 1950 and he found 
work as a foreman with the Walton and Tamura orchards. He retired from 
agriculture in 1970 and held several other jobs to keep busy in his 
retirement. 
     He was known for his sense of humor and perpetual smile, and loved the 
outdoors. He was an enthusiastic gardener and enjoyed clamming and crabbing 
expeditions to the coast with his family. He was a 43-year member of the 
Fraternal Order of Eagles, and he enjoyed keeping in touch with his Yugoslav 
roots.
     He is survived by his children and their families; son Steve Stancin, 
Clear Lake, Calif.; daughters and their spouses Mary and John Harvath, Yakima, 
Wash.; and Ginny and Don Bland, Mt. Hood. Also surviving is his sister Mary 
and her husband Fred Windle, Aberdeen, Wash.; fifteen grandchildren and 
numerous great-grandchildren. 
     In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son John Stancin.
     Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, at 
Mountain View Cemetery on Tucker Road. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation 
& Burial.
